Case study
Farah is a product designer in Petaling Jaya, remote working over the internet for foreign clients. Her work brings in RM300,000. She claims about RM25,000 in personal tax reliefs. She has been filing Form BE all these while. She is wondering if she would be better off filing with other forms instead.
Filing as herself with Form BE, she would reach the 25% tax rate bracket, paying RM53,150 in tax.
With her income in Malaysia, she pays 17.7% of her income as tax, but if she filed using a corporate entity, she pays 15% of income as tax instead. That is the first source of savings by choosing the right form to file.
Moreover, businesses can reduce the taxable amount with business expenses.
After a private workshop, she found out that she has RM78,000 of business expenses, from broadband bills, transportation, marketing expenses, work-from-home reimbursements etc. Employer contributions to EPF are also considered business expenses too.
Through an LLP, she pays herself a RM95,000 salary, and the LLP puts RM18,050 into her EPF. Her personal tax on that salary is RM3,700. The LLP pays RM16,343 on the RM108,950 left.
With 27Gems' recommendations, the overall tax payable becomes RM20,043.
With 27Gems' recommendations, she can stop overpaying RM33,107 every year.
